Project Steam Lass (SUMMER 2021)

PROJECT STEAM LASS ARCHIVES (SUMMER 2021)
A basic sketch of Avery's new design. I especially love the the outfit and giant glasses I drew on them. Also, this is when I was in the faze where one in every five characters I made was a demon or part demon hence the horns and tail. The gear motif's throughout the top piece of the dress are to elude to the fact that this character is a mechanic. The plasters on the legs were to show off that Avery is rather clumsy when it comes to making her inventions. She at the time of this redesign was one of the more younger and inexperienced mechanics within my comics however whilst still clumsy she's actually one of the more smarter characters.
A more steampunk inspired design for Avery. I made the glasses into goggles and added some cracks into them to reflect this characters clumsy nature. This design is one of my favourites out of the many that I made and I did consider it being her main outfit for a while. The boots however.... I was trying to put belt buckles onto them however 17 year old me hadn't figured out how to exactly draw that yet hence why the boots look weird.
My favourite outfit for her. In the comics Avery made this dress herself hence the messy stitching and random buttons throughout. The fact that I ultimately decided to not have this as her default outfit is a missed opportunity. It's one of the better character outfits I designed in 2021 out of the 100's I made (this includes scrapped outfits as well) plus the inspiration for it came from a Vocaloid song called "Tokyo Teddy Bear", which is a personal favourite of mine.
The original and alternative colour palette for Avery. These colour palette's were NEVER put into a coloured drawing as I later decided that those colours together didn't look nice and didn't go with the steampunk aesthetic I was trying to go for. I tired putting a gear motif onto her boots however it didn't turn out the way I initially pictured.
Some very early concept art of Avery working for Korus.Inc. This was made to be a mock-up/rough sketch of the initial design of the workshop. I decided to give Avery a slightly different hairstyle here from her usual one as well as making her slightly taller than most characters. The goggle design is also slightly different here as instead of being more rounded they take on more of an oval shape which I did like a lot at the time of this design for her.
One thing you'll notice across a lot of these concept designs for Avery is the gear motif's throughout. In 2021 I began experimenting a lot with patterns and symbols (especially in Project Hanako) I found the gear motif to be something that was one, interesting to draw and two, elude to the fact that this character tinkers with machinery. I also decided to do some alternative eyewear for fun. The top right one I drew to be a nod to a certain Manga series that I was obsessed with back in high school.
A early coloured sketch of Avery. This is near the final stages of the design process for her. The colour palette I chose wasn't the greatest hence why I scrapped it. This is also when I started making the outfit more simple instead of over the top.
The first character bio for Avery. Nowadays, her ability, height and species are different. Her hair style was originally meant to resemble a cloud shape hence the cloud ability. It was ability not suited for combat (hence why Avery is a support hero) and it literally summoned clouds which now that I think about it, it would be a nightmare for people who do the weather forecast.
So remember how I was saying Avery got a different ability later on? Well this is the ability. This ability was chosen for one reason: COMEDY! I planned out a scene where Avery uses her ability by accident and fazes through a wall.
The final design for Avery (well in 2021, her design has changed drastically since then) The colour palette I chose is pretty nice. It's not too harsh and it stays to a few colours (which is something I struggled with a lot in 2021) so it's nice to see me learn from those mistakes.
